Evaluation of Acute Torticollis in an Adult with a History of Childhood Torticollis
Richard E. Erhard, DC, PT Brian F Hagen, MPT
Abstract: Torticollis is a clinical presentation which may have various etiologies. A common differentiation between types of torticollis is age grouping. The woman in this presentation had undergone surgery on the neck at age two and subsequently had multiple torticollis episodes for the next six years. These episodes ceased spontaneously for twenty years, reoccurring without trauma at age twenty-eight. Evaluations and treatment results with two-year follow-up are reported.

Whiplash Part I: Etiology and Pathology
Claire Horn PT, (B.Sc. Physiotherapy, South Africa)
Abstract: This review presents available information on the etiology and pathology associated with whiplash. Whiplash injury constitutes a substantial problem in every society where motor vehicles are a form of transport. The resultant forces on the neck are primarily extension or hyperextension followed by flexion. Potential injured structures include zygopophyseal joints, intervertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, the nervous system, meninges and arteries.

Whiplash Part II: Clinical Presentation, Approaches to Management and Prevention
Claire Horn PT, (B.Sc. Physiotherapy, South Africa)
Abstract: This paper reviews current literature on the clinical presentations associated with whiplash, approaches to management and briefly comments on prevention. Physical examination and findings in the acute, sub acute and chronic stages of whiplash are discussed. Studies related to treatment and management are not conclusive in the value of physical therapy intervention and further study in the form of randomized clinical trials are suggested.

Whiplash Part III: Sub acute Whiplash - A Case Study
Claire Horn PT, (B.Sc. Physiotherapy, South Africa)
Abstract: This case study highlights typical findings in a post whiplash injury presentation at the early acute to sub acute stages. The patient discussed is a 26 year old woman who broad sided a tow truck. The subjective information obtained in the initial interview is outlined with specific information on the history of the accident. Objective physical examination findings are presented and rationale for treatment and treatment progression are discussed.
